The Armed Forces of the Philippines has assured it is on top of the security situation in Mindanao amid the US Embassy in Manila’s travel warning in parts of Mindanao and Sulu.
“The AFP together with the PNP are on top of the security situation in southern Mindanao particularly in Sulu, Basilan and the whole Mindanao,” AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Joselito Kakilala said on Friday.
He said they had not received intelligence reports on possible threats in Mindanao, but said they continued to monitor.
“[T]he general situation is normal,” he said.
He added they also enhanced their “cohesiveness” with other intelligence gathering and operations to be able “to thwart plans of violence by lawless groups” such as Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.
“We also respect the US travel advisory to its citizens living and touring in the country. Rest assured we’re on top of their safety and security,” he said.
He also asked for cooperation and advised the public to be vigilant against lawlessness and terrorism.
“The cooperation of every citizen in this country including tourists is crucial in defeating lawlessness and terrorism,” he said.
Rear Adm. Reynaldo Yoma, commander of Joint Task Force Zambasulta, said the travel warning was “justified” and may have been brought about by the recent incidents of kidnapping where the victims were brought to Sulu.
“To date, there are 14 [captives] in the hands of the [Abu Sayyaf]. Tourists especially foreigners are likely targets for kidnapping so I believe the advisory is justified,” he said.
He assured they provided the necessary security arrangements for official or business visits.
“The AFP is trying its best to go after the ASG and keep them on the run and deter the group from planning kidnapping and other terroristic acts,” he said.
Col. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, also assured visitors were safe as long as their visit was an “escorted” one. RC
