‘Abusive men think too highly of themselves’ — Malaysian lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Most domestic violence cases against women are the result of men thinking too highly of themselves, says a Shari’a lawyer.

Tengku Dr. Naufal Tengku Mansor said most women were taken advantage of because of a flawed concept where women are regarded as weak, unable to defend or make decisions for themselves.

This perception had single-handedly caused the steady rise in domestic violence against women, with 3,673 cases recorded, according to the latest figure up to September 2014. In 2010, 3,173 cases were recorded by police and this number shot up to 4,123 in 2013.

“Research has shown that most domestic violence and violence against women is based on gender perception.

“The perpetrators – men – often think they are higher beings than women, therefore they can do as they please,” he said during a talk on gender perception at the Institut Sosial Malaysia office.

The talk was the second in a five-part series organized by the institute to discuss social issues.
