Did you know: National Artist Jose Joya

Today, May 11, is the 20th death anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Jose Joya. Born in Manila on June 3, 1931, Joya served as head of the committee on visual arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and president of the Art Association of the Philippines. He was awarded the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1961, the Patnubay ng Kalinangan Award in 1971 and the Asean Artist Award in 1990. Joya died in 1995 and was posthumously named National Artist in 2003.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
