ILOILO CITY—Police are linking the killing of a 39-year-old man by his 61-year-old father in the town of San Jose, Antique province, to the recently concluded fight between boxing champions Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Police said Romero Rebreza died of a gunshot wound in the chest inflicted by his father, Elpidio Rebreza, after the boxing match on Sunday.
Elpidio, investigators said, used a homemade shotgun to shoot his son, Romero, in their residence in the village of San Pedro in San Jose.
Police have detained Elpidio at the San Jose police station, according to PO3 Michael Grejaldo, chief investigator of the town’s police office.
Citing results of an initial police investigation, Grejaldo said the victim and his father had an argument while watching the boxing match at their house.
Elpidio allegedly told his son to get a bolo to be used in opening coconuts as the elder Rebreza was preparing coconut milk.
Romeo, however, was glued to the TV set for the boxing match and refused to heed the errand.
This irked Elpidio who turned off the TV set, prompting his son to storm out of their house and watch the match at a neighbor’s house.
When Romeo returned after the match, the two had a heated argument, which led to the shooting.
Grejaldo said it was unclear who owned the gun.
