THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will take custody of the recruiters of Mary Jane Veloso, whose execution was deferred by Indonesia at the last minute early Wednesday.

Maria Kristina P. Sergio alias Mary Christine Gulles Pasadilla surfaced at the Nueva Ecija Police on the same day Veloso was scheduled for execution.

Sergio said she went to the police because there are threats to her life. She and two others are facing human trafficking, illegal recruitment and estafa with swindling cases before the Department of Justice.

Sergio offered Veloso a job in Malaysia in exchange for the payment of a motorcycle, a mobile phone and P7,000.

The two left for Malaysia on April 22, 2010. At a mall in Petaling Jaya, they met a certain “Ike,” a man of African descent.

Then, Veloso, in an affidavit, said Sergio told her to do an “errand” in Indonesia. Sergio, according to Veloso, bought her clothes and gave her an empty but heavy luggage.

Upon her arrival at Yogyakarta, she is immediately arrested by authorities for bringing in 2.6 kilograms of heroin.

Veloso’s execution was stopped at the last minute after the Philippine government informed its Indonesian counterpart of a complaint filed by Veloso against Sergio. The government also informed its Indonesian counterpart of Sergio’s surrender.

“The NBI is now getting her custody as we speak,” de Lima said.

De Lima said she already talked about Sergio’s custody with Interior Secretary Mar Roxas. AC
