‘Quiel’ weakens, continues to move away from Philippines

MANILA, Philippines—Signal No. 3 has been lowered in some provinces as Typhoon “Quiel” (international name: Nalgae) weakens and continues to move away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said late Saturday.

In its 11 p.m. weather update, Pagasa said that as of 10 p.m., Quiel was seen 150 kilometers west of Baguio City and was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 185 kph.

Quiel maintained its speed and course and was still moving westward at 26 kph, Pagasa said.

Signal No. 2 remains raised over Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet¸Pangasinan and Zambales while Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao¸Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao¸Cagayan, Isabela¸ Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan and the Calayan and Babuyan groups of islands.

Signal warnings elsewhere were lowered, the state-run weather bureau said.

Nevertheless, residents living in low lying and mountainous areas in provinces with signal warnings were warned against possible flashflood and landslides while those living along coastal areas were alerted against possible storm surges, Pagasa said.

Quiel was forecast to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon.

“Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 – 25 millimeters per hour within the 500 km diameter of the typhoon,” Pagasa added.

Meanwhile, Quiel was expected to be 690 km west northwest of Baguio City by Sunday evening, Pagasa said.
