Prisoners learn how to beat the summer heat

How do the detainees of the Philippine National Police Custodial Center beat the summer heat while in prison?

They stay in an open tent outside their cells—but within the custodial center compound—the PNP have just installed to help them cope with the sweltering heat.

PNP detainees, high-profile or not, have been allowed to extend their “sunning time” every morning outside their cells, Superintendent Arnel Apod, of the PNP Headquarters Support Service.

Apod in a statement sent to the media through PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said they also allowed the detainees to leave open their cell windows to let fresh air in.

There are at least 70 detainees who are held at the Custodial Center inside the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Among the high-profile PNP inmates are pork barrel scam suspects Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. Both personalities have been under fire for their “side trips” and lavish parties while inside and outside jail.

Other prisoners detained in Crame are: communist leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon; former Elections Supervisor Lintang Bedol; “Atimonan rubout” suspect Superintendent Hansel Marantan; and Superintendent Rommel Miranda, accused in the 2012 kidnap-slay of businesswoman Leah Ng.

Apod added that in emergency situations wherein detainees would complain of hypertension, the PNP General Hospital will immediately send personnel to give them medical attention.
