Metro Manila records hottest day of the year

Residents of Metro Manila experienced searing heat on Saturday as the region recorded the hottest temperature so far this year, the state weather bureau said.

According to Ben Oris, weather forecaster of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the temperature in Metro Manila reached 36.2 degrees Celsius, which was recorded at 2 p.m. at the agency’s headquarters at Science Garden in Quezon City.

Oris said the temperature would continue to rise until the middle of May.

He said the heat is expected to cool down on the last week of May, which is the start of the rainy season.

Despite today’s high temperature, it is still lower than last year’s record of 36.7 degrees Celsius. The hottest temperature in Metro Manila was recorded on May 14, 1987, at 38.5 degrees Celsius.

The hottest temperature in the country was recorded in Tuguegarao City at 42.2 degrees Celsius on May 11, 1969. Ed Glorious Cabading/RC
