ILOILO CITY—Two persons including a policeman died and two others including a police chief were wounded in a stabbing spree in Pototan town in Iloilo early Tuesday.
Policemen shot dead the intoxicated assailant, identified as Arnold Dagohoy, after he stabbed his elder brother Warlito, PO1 Dan Calsberg Bayogos, and Senior Insp. Ariel Corcino, the town’s acting police chief, according to a report of the Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO).
Bayogos died from stab wounds in the stomach while Corcino was brought to the Iloilo Mission Hospital in Iloilo City for treatment of wounds in his stomach and hands.
The policemen were part of a four-member team that responded to a report that an intoxicated person armed with a knife was causing a disturbance in Barangay Naslo about 2:30 a.m.
But Dagohoy threw a stone at the policemen when they approached. He then stabbed Bayogos and Corcino as they came nearer to the assailant.
Bayogos was pronounced dead on arrival at the Iloilo provincial hospital while Dagohoy died from gunshot wounds in the back.
Dagohoy had also stabbed his elder brother Warlito before the policemen arrived.
Investigators recovered an eight-and-a-half-inch-long knife used by the Dagohoy in stabbing his victims.
Chief Insp. Joseph Almaquer, IPPO spokesperson, said Bayogos will receive burial and other benefits for policemen killed in the line of duty. He said they will also review the conduct of the operation.
