Man dies after scuffle with bus company guard in QC

A man crashed his motorcycle and died after he was shot thrice in the head by a bus company security guard on Friday night near a terminal in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Victim Rolando Ibañez, a resident of Barangay Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, was shot at around 6:25 p.m. by John Rodterry Asis of Admiral Transport Inc., a sister company of Don Mariano Transit Corp., police said.

Bus conductor Rebecca Romagos told police that she rushed to the employees’ quarters inside the Don Mariano terminal on Quirino Highway in Barangay Kaligayahan when she saw Ibañez and the 23-year-old security guard scuffling over a gun, case investigator PO1 Raldwin Jones Sanchez said.

From the room, Romagos said she heard three gun shots. She then went out and saw how the bloodied victim crashed his motorcycle, Sanchez said.

Asis, who was detained at the Quezon City Police District headquarters in Camp Karingal, admitted that he killed the victim but said he was only defending himself.

The suspect said it was the first time he met the victim, who asked him at around 12 noon about a bus driver named “Ronald.” He left at around 2 p.m. and returned a few minutes later.

At past 5 p.m., Ibañez went inside the guard house, asked Asis if he was about to have dinner, pointed a gun at his waist and wrapped an arm around his neck. Asis then grabbed the gun from Ibañez and pushed him with his elbow, the suspect narrated.

“I was shocked at what he did. I tried hard to save myself and get back at him,” Asis said. “I even thought I would die first.”

When Asis got hold of the gun, he destroyed it and shot Ibañez using his service firearm while the latter was on his way out toward his motorcycle.

The victim managed to ride on his motorcycle but the suspect shot him again twice. He crashed in front of Abad Eatery on Quirino Highway in Barangay Kaligayahan.

Ibañez died of multiple gunshot wounds to his head. Meanwhile, the suspect was arrested at the guard house where police found a .38 cal. revolver, three fired cartridge cases and an improvised handgun. RC
