Michael Fareñas (32W-3L-3D, 26 KOs) of the Peñalosa stable tipped the scales at the division limit of 126lb while defending champion Edgar Gabejan (22W-25L-4D, 6 KOs) of the Aljoe Jaro Stable had to make two trips to the scales before making the contracted weight for their Philippine featherweight championship showdown tonight at the spanking Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.
Dodie Boy Peñalosa Jr. weighed 122lb while his opponent Donriel Marcos stepped in at 123lb. They are scheduled to fight for eight rounds as the young Peñalosa tries to extend his unbeaten and perfect knockout streak in his seventh professional fight.
While preparing for this bout, Dodie Jr. sparred twice with the returning former WBO superflyweight champion Marvin Sonsona.
Younger brother Dave Peñalosa (117lb) will make his four-round professional debut as a bantamweight against John Edu Torbiso (118.5lb). Another member of the Sonsona clan, Eden Sonsona (122.25lb) will battle Godwin Tubigon (120.5lb) in a ten rounder.
Other boxers set to see action in the “Dugong Kampeon” card include Virgilio Silvano (109lb) vs. Lionel Legada (108.5lb) in 8 rounds, Anthony Sabalde (119lbs) vs. Jimmy Paypa (119lbs) in 8 rounds, Sonny Katiangdagho (131lbs) vs. Rodel Wenceslao (128.5lbs) in 6 rounds, Jhaleel Payao (112.5lbs)vs. Jaime Bermiso (111lbs) in 4 rounds, Raymund Empic (115lbs) vs. Sherwin Caday (113lbs) in 4 rounds and Jerome Casas (116lbs) vs. Romel Acruz (115lbs) also in 4 rounds.
This will be the fourth edition of the “Dugong Kampeon” fight series. Fights start at 6 p.m. GMA Television will broadcast the fight on a delayed basis.
Yesterday’s weigh-in and pre-fight physical examination were held at the GAB-Cebu office and supervised by Glen Agena and Celso Miranda.
