PRAGUE — Czech police say they have seized a record amount of cocaine in a shipment of bananas for a supermarket.
Barbora Kudlackova, spokeswoman for the police anti-narcotics unit, says more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of cocaine was packed among the bananas.
Kudlackova said Friday it was a random find and that the seizure has a street value of some $40 million.
Kudlackova confirmed that the seizure was bigger than the country’s previous record of 117 kilograms (258 pounds) in 1999, but did not provide an exact weight for the latest seizure.
Police said it would be inopportune to disclose any other details given the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Similar seizures have been made in recent years in Denmark and Germany.
