A photo of a shirt printed with the words “I promise, I’ll pull out” that has gone viral earned the ire of a militant solon representing women in the House of Representatives.
In a statement, Gabriela Rep. Emmi de Jesus said the slogan gives an impression for young boys to tolerate rape.
“The play of words may sound like a harmless joke to marketers, but this has a subtle encouragement for young boys to seduce women and subject them to date rape,” De Jesus said.
The photo of the shirt was reportedly taken at the boy teen’s section of SM Fairview, Quezon City. The photo uploaded on Facebook has since drawn criticisms from netizens.
De Jesus scored SM for seemingly not learning from a similar incident when a photo of another suggestive shirt—with a slogan “It’s not rape. It’s a snuggle with a struggle”—that was sold at SM also went viral last year.
The militant solon said major retailers should screen its merchandise from suggestive and sexist messages that “are harmful to women and foment violence, bullying, voyeurism, unsafe nonconsensual sex and other antiwomen acts.”
SM has since removed the suggestive shirt from its stores. RC
