Lawyers’ group told justice not ‘commodity’

CEBU CITY—Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of Leyte has posed a challenge to the country’s lawyers: Revive the relevance of the law profession.

In a speech at the 15th National Lawyers’ Convention on Saturday, Romualdez said some lawyers have forgotten the essence of the law profession—an instrument to get justice for those who need it.

Romualdez, also a lawyer, said lawyers sometimes create legal problems and make the law profession a business.

“Lawyers, consciously or unconsciously, conspire or assist clients to subvert and circumvent the laws or regulations to ensure fruitful and successful businesses,” he said. Carmel Loise Matus, Inquirer Visayas
