AT least 71 cooperatives belong to the Mandaue City Cooperative Development Council (MCCDC) and contribute to the city’s economic growth and employment.
City Councilor Beethoven Andaya said about 7,000 persons were given jobs through cooperatives and that most companies in Mandaue have a cooperative that benefits their employees and even residents in neighboring towns.
During the retrenchment in export firm Giardini del Sole a few years ago, displaced employees were given new jobs by a cooperative, recalled Andaya.
Several activities are lined up for October which is designated Cooperative Month. A caravan will kick off the celebration followed by tree planting, sports activities and trade fairs.
Each cooperative which is registered under MCCDC is asked to participate in programs of the local government like the recent cleanup in the Butuanon River.
The MCCDC is registered under Cooperative Development Authority (CDA). REPORTER JUCELL MARIE P. CUYOS
