Bush fire hits slope of Mayon Volcano
LEGAZPI CITY – A bush fire hit the slope of Mayon Volcano on Monday afternoon, the Bureau of Fire Protection in Legazpi City said.
Fire Officer 1 Grace Rabulan said one fire truck has been dispatched to the area to put out the fire, along with a team to determine the cause of the blaze.
Based on an initial report, the fire was seen at the grassland located along a slope in Barangay (village) of Mabinit in Legazpi City, he said.
According to Mayor Herbie Aguas of Sto. Domingo, the town that adjoins Legazpi City, they noticed smoke coming from the slope of Mayon Volcano sometime around 4 p.m.
The raging fire could still be seen past 9 p.m. from the downtown area of Legazpi City.
Aguas said the information he has gathered from the town’s fire chief, Fidel Bandal, indicated that the fire appeared to have affected at least one hectare of the mountain in an area about 5 to 6 kilometers from the nearest populated area.
