March was declared National Fire Prevention Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A signed in 1966 by President Ferdinand Marcos. In 2014, a total of 15,897 fires were recorded nationwide, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection.
The figure was more than 29 percent higher than the 12,301 fires reported in 2013.
