MANILA, Philippines—A 38-year-old housemaid died of electrocution while she was washing clothes in Manila Wednesday afternoon.

Grace Maunela, a stay-in employee at 2237 F. Varona St. in Tondo, was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Tondo Medical Center.

SPO2 Milbert Balinggan, of the Manila Police District homicide section, said that the incident happened at around 4:30 p.m. in the laundry area of the house.

Balinggan revealed that before the incident, the housemaid had decided to do her laundry chores minutes after electricity was restored in the area following an outage at 1 p.m. caused by Typhoon “Pedring.”

He said that when Maunela plugged in the washing machine, she accidentally touched an exposed wire.

A neighbor, who saw the maid writhing on the ground, managed to dislodge her grip on the live wire.

Maunela was brought to the nearest hospital but the effort to save her proved futile. Her body was brought to the St. Yvan funeral parlor for autopsy and safekeeping.
