DIGOS CITY – A minor vehicular accident turned ugly for the provincial veterinarian of Davao del Sur when he ended up being charged with violation of the new gun licensing law and another felony.
Supt. Querubin Manalang, the city police chief, said complaints for illegal possession of firearms and reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property – in relation to R.A. 7610 (child abuse) – had been filed against Dr. Nestor Barroga Sr. before the city prosecutors office here.
It was learned that Barroga and another motorist, Hazel Torres Faller, 38, of Central Subdivision here, had figured in a minor vehicular incident at the drive-thru of a popular food chain.
None of them or the several children on board Faller’s car was hurt.
Senior Supt. Michael John Dubria, provincial police director, said Barroga was reportedly fuming mad and confronted Faller with a handgun on his hand.
It was learned that it was Barroga’s vehicle, which bumped Faller’s car.
The alarmed Faller sought police assistance for fear that Barroga would do something against them, Dubria said.
Manalang said responding policemen caught up with Barroga and seized from him a .45 caliber pistol, four ammunition magazines, and 37 live ammunition.
Manalang said Barroga presented gun license documents but it did not match the gun he had at the time of his apprehension.
Barroga later sought hospital confinement, with his doctor attesting he had suffered from hypertension.
“It was just a very slight vehicular incident that turned worst when he carried an unlicensed handgun while accosting the woman driving the other vehicle where there are children inside,” Manalang said.
