Snowstorm smacks Slovenia and Spain

A heavy snowstorm has snarled traffic in northern Spain and Slovenia, with scores of motorists needing to be rescued.

Police and military services said Thursday they had rescued some 400 people from vehicles stuck on roads cut off by heavy snowfalls across northern Spain.

Spain’s state rail company, Renfe, suspended services between Leon and the northern coastal region of Asturias.

In Slovenia, authorities closed three border crossings to truck traffic to prevent road pileups.

Slovenian authorities told people to stay indoors if possible. Schools were closed Thursday in two municipalities in the west, and more closing were expected on Friday.
