MANILA, Philippines — A 6.2- magnitude quake shook the island province of Catanduanes in the Bicol region late Monday evening, according to a Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s (Phivolcs) earthquake bulletin.
Phivolcs initially said it was a 6.3-magnitude earthquake.
It said aftershocks were expected.
The quake was recorded 92 kilometers northeast of Virac at 11:13 p.m.
The tectonic quake had a depth of one kilometer.
Phivolcs said the tremor was felt as Intensity III in Panganiban town, Catanduanes; and in Sorsogon City, Sorsogon; and Legazpi City in Albay, both in Bicol. Intensity III can be felt by many people indoors, especially in upper floors of buildings or hanging objects swing moderately, according to Phivolcs
It was also felt as Intensity II in Naga City, Camarines Sur, which means it was felt by few individuals resting indoors or hanging objects swung slightly.
The Philippines lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where it is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activities.
There were no reports of damage.
