MANILA, Philippines–Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago hopes the Senate probe on reportedly anomalous deals involving Vice President Jejomar Binay when he was Makati mayor will not “go on and on forever.”
“I wish the investigation will end,” Santiago on Thursday said at the sidelines of her meet-and-greet with fans of her book “Stupid is Forever.”
“If there’s any wrongdoing in the past, then find out who is responsible for it, and let them suffer what the judicial system imposes so that it does not go on and on forever, only my book ‘Stupid is Forever,'” she said.
But the investigation of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee will only end if Binay and other officials tagged by accusers will face the panel, she said.
“Some will ask, if (Binay) is innocent, why does he refuse to attend? It even came to a point when some senators threatened to issue a warrant of arrest for his mayor son (Junjun Binay) to show up,” Santiago said.
“I wish the hearing will be finished and the fastest thing for it to end is that the father and son will turn up and the case will be forwarded to the Ombudsman,” she added.
“We should have other news on the horizon instead because we are getting stuck at this point. (The Senate probe) does not bring hope or any good cheer to the Filipinos,” Santiago said.
She stressed that those who are found to have participated in any anomaly should suffer the consequences prescribed by law.
Santiago earlier authored a Senate resolution seeking to investigate the involvement of Hilmarc’s Construction Corp. on the allegedly overpriced Makati City Hall Building 2 and other government projects.
