MANILA, Philippines–Two inmates of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) were stabbed by a fellow prisoner who was jolted out of sleep by their noise around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

NBP office in charge Superintendent Richard Schwarskopf said Michael Tibag and Mariano Bierso received superficial wounds and were treated at the prison hospital.

The suspect, Mikael Ilig, on the other hand, was taken to a disciplinary cell.

The three were all detained at the NBP medium security compound.

“Natutulog yung suspect bigla daw naalimpungatan dahil sa ingay nung victims nahawakan yung scalpel kaya nasaksak,” Schwarskopf told INQUIRER.net over the phone.

The small scalpel was used by inmates to carve statues and picture frames that are sold to visitors.

Schwarskopf said it was the first time in years that such an incident happened at the medium security compound. He said the elders talked to the suspect but a criminal case will also be filed against him.
