BACOLOD CITY – An injured dolphin was found stranded in the waters of Takot Lutaw in Barangay (village) Pta. Salong, Manapla, Negros Occidental, 8:30 a.m. Monday and was set free soon after, Manapla Mayor Lourdes Escalante said.
The Risso’s Dolphin (Grampus griseus) appeared to have been speared and its body had markings of a net indicating that it had also been trapped, the mayor said.
The 6 to 7-foot dolphin had a wound beside its dorsal fin, Municipal Agriculturist Alejandro Malijoc said in a report to the mayor.
It was about 1 kilometer from the shoreline of Barangay Pta. Salong and was brought to shoreline of Barangay 2-A for investigation, documentation and treatment of its wounds, after which it was released to the sea alive and was observed for an hour until it disappeared, he added.
