Pope John Paul II spent five days in the Philippines during his second papal visit to the country in 1995. The five-day visit was the pope’s first overseas trip after he underwent an artificial bone implant in the leg following a hip injury in April 1994. The Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, flew Pope John Paul II from Manila to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on Jan. 16, 1995. Some 10,000 people bade the pope farewell at the old Manila International Airport. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
