Another fire hits Escolta building

MANILA, Philippines–A small fire was detected anew Friday noon from the old building of the City College of Manila that caught fire two days ago on Escolta Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

Superintendent Jaime Ramirez, Manila Fire Marshall, said in a radio interview that the smoke came from the third floor of the dilapidated building.

“Malamang dahil ito sa mga naiwan na stock ng papel. Pero titignan pa rin natin,” Ramirez said.

The fire was put out as of press time.

The earlier fire on Wednesday prompted Manila officials to alter the route of the Black Nazarene parade.

Instead of turning to Escolta after crossing Jones Bridge, authorities asked the devotees to pass through the parallel Dasmariñas Street. This was to avoid injuries from falling debris.

Wednesday’s fire lasted for almost 12 hours. Flames reached up to the 14th floor after the fire first broke out on the eighth floor of the building.
