Today, Sept. 28, is the 101st birth anniversary of former President Diosdado Macapagal, father of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.  A bar topnotcher, he served as president from 1961 to 1965.  Fondly called “the poor boy from Lubao,” he authored and sponsored laws such as the Minimum Wage Law.  He was also responsible for changing the date of Philippine Independence from July 4 to June 12.  He died of heart failure, pneumonia and renal complications on April 21, 1997, and was buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani.
