MANILA, Philippines—Commuters on Monday clapped their hands while riding the train as a form of protest against the newly implemented fare hike of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT 3).
Commuters led by Riles Network convenor Sammy Malunes, former LRTA administrator Melquiades Robles and Tren Network spokesperson James Relativo rode the LRT 1 from Balintawak station in Quezon City to United Nations Avenue station in Manila.
They took the train on their way to the Supreme Court to file a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the fare hike.
On Monday, several groups also went to the Supreme Court to stop the fare increase.
The MRT 3 and LRT Lines 1 and 2 implemented a fare increase on Sunday, January 4, despite sharp criticisms from riders for the long queues at their stations during rush hour and for several operational glitches
