SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna—Former Cavite Gov. Juanito “Johnny” Remulla, the father of incumbent Cavite Gov. Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla, passed away Monday. He was 81.
A member of the provincial government staff, who requested anonymity for lack of authority to speak to the media, confirmed the passing of the elder Remulla around 9:30 a.m.
The former governor had been confined at the Intensive Care Unit of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa City since last week, “but the family has not disclosed his illness,” the staff said.
Remulla built a powerful dynasty in Cavite as the province rose to power as one of the country’s most prominent provinces.
He was also a close ally of one of the most influential presidents of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos.
Before going into politics, Remulla was a topflight lawyer as the senior partner of the Remulla, Estrella and Associates Law Office.
Remulla had also served as chairman of the board of Covelandia Island Resort in Binakayan, Cavite; MVS Cinema, Inc.; president of Superior Cane Plantation, Inc., and Midtown Theatrical and Commercial Corporation.
Remulla was born on April 14, 1933 in Toclong, Imus, Cavite, to a farmer couple, Crispin Remulla and Teofista Reyes.
He landed fourth in the 1956 Bar examinations after graduating from the College of Law in the University of the Philippines.
Remulla is the father of Juanito “Jonvic” Remulla Jr., the current governor of Cavite, former Congressman Gilbert Remulla and Congressman Jesus Crispin Remulla.
He is also the father-in-law of Attorney Sigmund Fortun.
The initial schedule of funeral rites is as follows: Funeraria Sapinosa in Imus City at 4 p.m. on Monday; at the provincial capitol in Trece Martires City at 2 p.m. on Tuesday; and the funeral Mass at the Imus Cathedral at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The family has not disclosed any other details as of 1:30 p.m.
