Scavenger kills trike driver in QC
A tricycle driver was stabbed to death by a scavenger Friday on Kalayaan Avenue in Teachers Village, Quezon City, the police said. Roberto Bergonia, 40, a resident of Barangay (village) Krus na Ligas, suffered stab wounds in the chest and head after he was attacked by Jhibel Avilla who immediately fled. PO2 Jogene Hernandez of the Quezon City police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said in a report that the victim was seated in a tricycle with his live-in partner when Avilla approached him, holding a knife. MMDA to open film fest school, theater
Coming soon: a Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) theater and an MMFF school. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Francis Tolentino made this announcement Friday in an interview with reporters at a mall in Mandaluyong City. He said that the facilities would open next month in front of the MMDA headquarters in Makati. “And the award-winning movies of 40 years (ago) will be archived. Anyone can watch; mass communication students can [go there]. There will be those who will lecture about filmmaking to students,” he added. According to him, the initial screening and judging of future MMFF entries may be done in the new theater. Asked about his reaction to rumors that Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada would be taking over the helm of the MMFF soon, Tolentino said he had no problem about being replaced. Kristine Felisse Mangunay
Last on Marikina’s 10 most wanted list arrested
Cooperation between the public and authorities proved to be beneficial to Marikina City after the local police force arrested Friday the last man on the list of its 10 most wanted persons. Marikina police chief Supt. Vincent Calanoga told the Inquirer in a phone interview that with Rex Antonio’s arrest, they have set a record of sorts, being the first among all police districts in Metro Manila to arrest their 10 most wanted men. Antonio was arrested by Marikina police intelligence operatives led by Senior Insp. Glenn Aculana inside his home in Antipolo, Rizal, at 12:30 p.m. He was facing three warrants for his arrest: two for robbery and one for violating the firearms law. The Napindan Elementary School Alumni Association (NESAA) is hosting a grand alumni homecoming today on the NES campus in Barangay Napindan, Taguig City, in celebration of the public school’s 70-year history. Assembly for the alumni parade is at 4 p.m. on the campus grounds. The program proper starts at 6 p.m. and will feature a tribute to retired teachers, performances, games and raffle.
