Two hurt in indiscriminate firing on Christmas Day

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded at least two incidents of indiscriminate firing by trigger-happy policemen during the holiday revelry.

Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesperson, said on Thursday that the two incidents were recorded in Metro Manila.

Mayor said five incidents of illegal discharge of firearms have also been recorded in the Ilocos Region while similar cases have been reported in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Eastern Visayas, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The police official said a security guard was involved in indiscriminate firing in Central Luzon while one person was hurt due to a stray bullet in the Calabarzon region.

He said a similar stray bullet incident has been reported in Eastern Visayas but no one was injured.

He added that one committed a self-injury in ARMM due to illegal discharge of his firearm.

As of Christmas Day, the PNP has confiscated three firearms in illegal discharge of firearms cases and has confiscated 420 illegal firecrackers as part of its “Ligtas Paskuhan 2014.”
