Cagayan governor arrested for election gun ban violation

ENRILE, Cagayan–Cagayan Governor Alvaro Antonio was arrested Monday morning for a midterm poll violation, when he allegedly discharged a weapon on election day, May 13, 2013.

Senior Superintendent Ronaldo Olay, Cagayan police director, said the governor was arrested by members of the Alcala town police at the provincial capitol due to a complaint filed by Secretary Manuel Mamba of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office, who is a native of Tuao town here.

Antonio was arrested just as he was about to board his car, after delivering a speech before provincial employees who were holding their Christmas program at the capitol gymnasium at about 11 a.m.

Sources, who declined to be named for lack of authority to speak on the matter, said the warrant for Antonio’s arrest, was issued by Judge Miraminda Cabulisan-Callangan of the Municipal Trial Court in Alcala, Antonio’s hometown.

Antonio, however, did not post bail. His daughter Tin said they will launch a fund-raising campaign to generate the P10,000 bail bond.
