MANILA, Philippines — Classes in the pre-school, elementary and high school levels were suspended Tuesday over the National Capital Region and Regions 2 (Cagayan Valley) and 4A (Calabarzon) as typhoon “Pedring” continued to pound parts of Luzon, the Department of Education (DepEd) said early Tuesday.
In a statement, DepEd said Director Elena Ruiz ordered that classes in the pre-school, elementary and high school levels in all public and private schools in NCR remain suspended.
Classes in the same levels were called off Monday afternoon due to the bad weather.
In Region 2, Regional Director Benito Tumamao declared the suspension of classes in the pre-school, elementary and high school levels also in private and public schools in Isabela, Cagayan, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya.
In Region 4A (Calabarzon), local authorities suspended classes in Antipolo City, Jala Jala, Rodriguez, and San Mateo in Rizal; in Rosario, General Trias, Tanza, and Bacoor in Cavite; in Sta. Rosa, Laguna; and in the entire Quezon Province.
DepEd Regional Diretor Sinforoda Guinares also suspended classes in the preschool, elementary and high school levels in all private and public schools in Occidental Mindoro due to flooding.
The Commission on Higher Education also suspended classes in the college and graduate levels.
Julito Vitriolo, executive director of CHEd, made the announcement around 7:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, DepEd said that automatic suspension of classes based on storm signal warnings raised by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) were also being followed.
Local authorities and local DepEd officials or school administrators may declare suspension of classes depending on the prevailing weather conditions in their areas. With a report from Nina Calleja, Inquirer
