Strong winds, heavy rains batter Sorsogon coastal town

MATNOG, Sorsogon—Strong winds and heavy rains started to batter Matnog town in Sorsogon on Saturday evening as typhoon Ruby (international name: Hagupit) continued to move closer to land.

Electricity has also been down since around 7:40 p.m. in the entire town.

Residents near coastal areas have been evacuated Saturday morning to higher ground after the local government declared forced evacuation.

Matnog is a coastal town with 40 barangays (villages), most of which are facing the Pacific Ocean.

In its latest weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical and Services Administration (Pagasa) has raised public storm warning signal number 3 in the entire province.
