100 families homeless in QC blaze

MANILA, Philippines — More than 100 families were left homeless in an early morning blaze that swept through 80 houses in Quezon City Monday.

The fire started on the second floor of 75-year-old Milagros Mabilangan’s house on the corner of G. Araneta Avenue and Sgt. Rivera Street in Barangay (village) Masambong.

Superintendent Jesus Fernandez, Quezon City Fire Marshall, said in a text message that a lighted candle left unattended by Mabilangan could have sparked the blaze.

Mabilangan is said to have been suffering from memory loss, according to the fire official.

From Mabilangan’s house, Fernandez said the blaze swept through nearby houses, which mere mostly made of light materials.

Fire started at 4:52 a.m. It was put out at 6:55 a.m. after it reached fifth alarm.
