Police arrest man for hitting daughter with hammer

A man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after he allegedly punched his 17-year-old daughter and hit her with a hammer to punish her for frequently going out with her friends at night.

Burgos Guanzon, a construction worker, was reportedly enraged when his daughter left their house on Guerilla Street in Barangay (village) Sto. Niño in Marikina City, on Friday night without asking for permission.

SPO2 Gemma Mirabueno of the Marikina police said Guanzon and his wife had looked in vain for hours for their daughter in places where she and her friends would usually hang out.

When their daughter did come home around 6 a.m. the following day, Mirabueno said Guanzon was so angry that he punched his daughter several times.

When she fell asleep in the afternoon, he drenched her in lukewarm water and then hit her with a hammer in various parts of the body.

A concerned neighbor who heard the beatings reported the incident to authorities. The victim was brought to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center for treatment while her father was arrested by the police. He faces charges of child abuse.

This is the second incident in a week in Marikina City which involved a father hitting his child with a hammer. On Tuesday, balut vendor Carlos Gonzales sent his 11-year-old son to the hospital after hitting him with the tool in a fit of rage. Jovic Yee
