MANILA, Philippines—A 33-year-old Marine officer was found dead inside her car in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Navy said on Friday.
“The Philippine Navy is saddened by the death of First Lieutenant Shelina Calumay, a member of [Naval Officers Candidate Course] Class 13, from Batac, Ilocos Norte,” Navy public affairs officer Lieutenant Commander Marineth Domingo said in a statement.
Calumay was assigned to the office of the Naval Inspector General, a unit responsible for checking irregularities in the service.
“Her lifeless body was found at 6 a.m. last November 26 inside her car, parked in the parking lot in front of Jurado Hall at Naval Station Jose Francisco, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City,” Domingo said.
The victim was found with a gunshot wound on her face. Her personal belongings, such as her wallet and cellphone, were missing.
A hole marked the left window of her car but no gun was found on the scene.
“The Navy personnel cordoned [off] the area and the PNP Soco was immediately notified regarding the incident for the conduct of investigation,” Domingo said.
An investigation by the Navy and the Philippine National Police is still ongoing while a parallel investigation by the Naval Provost Marshall was also formed “for the speedy resolution of the case.”
“The Navy is extending its condolences and deepest sympathy to her husband, Sergeant Jeremy Calumay, who is also a Marine, and her baby, and all her loved ones,” Domingo said.
Last week, theft was reported at the commissary at the nearby Navy headquarters also at the Bonifacio Naval Station.
About P2 million was taken from the safe kept inside the managers’ office at the AFP Commissary and Exchange. The vault did not appear to have been forcibly opened.
