MANILA, Philippines – The local government of Manila, headed by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, declared the suspension of classes and government work in the city from January 15 to 19, 2015 in time to the anticipated visit of Pope Francis in the country.

Executive Order 75 signed by Estrada states that the suspension of work in government offices and classes has been recommended “to ensure public order and convenience.”

Employees working for maintenance of peace and order, disaster risk management, traffic management, and health and sanitation in the city are required to report on the said dates.

Meanwhile, suspension of work in private companies is said to be under the discretion of the employers.

The pontiff will visit various sites in Manila during his visit including Malacañang Palace, Manila Cathedral, Rizal Park and University of Santo Tomas.
