Search launched for 3 missing after boat capsizes off Negros Oriental town

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Search and rescue operations have been ongoing for the three passengers of a motorized boat that capsized in the waters off Zamboangita town, Negros Oriental early Thursday.

PO3 Ramil Melon of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office operations center said they were still getting the complete names of the passengers who were only identified by their nicknames –Michael, Joker and Maymay.

The three were on board a motorized banca, which left Maria town, Siquijor, about 2 p.m. on Wednesday and was supposed to arrive at Manjuyod town, Negros Oriental about 10 a.m. on Thursday.

But the vessel was hit by strong waves, causing it to capsize early Thursday morning.

A passenger, Roger Calidkid, was rescued in Barangay Malatapay in Zamboanguita town about 8 a.m. and reported what happened to the motorized banca.

A search was immediately launched by the Coast Guard and the local police.
