MANILA, Philippines – Former Cavite governor Erineo “Ayong” Maliksi on Wednesday found himself in deep trouble after the Office of the Ombudsman formally filed a graft charge against him before the Sandiganbayan.

Maliksi is being accused of violating Section 3(e) of Republic Act No. 3019 (Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act) for the irregular procurement of medicines worth P2.5 million.

Maliksi allegedly gave unwarranted advantage or preference to the supplier, Allied Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Inc., which was awarded the government contract without public bidding and without proving that its medicines cost the cheapest.

Meanwhile, the complaint against Nina Nguyen Lagac, Maliksi’s chief of staff, was dismissed for insufficiency of evidence. The administrative charge of grave misconduct against Maliksi was dismissed by virtue of his reelection in 2004.

The case stemmed from the complaint filed by then Vice-Governor Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla.
