UC dominates Cesafi badminton

Webmasters nearly score sweep in secondary competition with five titles

The University of Cebu (UC) dominated the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. badminton tournament by nearly sweeping the secondary titles at the end of the competition yesterday at the Metro Sports Center in brgy. Lahug.

UC closed out its campaign in the secondary class with five titles.

UC’s Aljun Penute lorded the high school boys B after winning over Emilio Mangubat of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).

Zaien Zafra gave UC another title by topping the boys A category, outplaying USJ-R’s Carlo Alisoso in the finals.

Jona Adrian Lim stunned Karen Felisada of USJ-R for UC’s third title.

In the doubles category, the UC tandem of Julie Marie Malazarte and Shemae Grace Cabaluna dominated the girls side by cruising past to Southwestern University’s (SWU) Android Rose Tingson and Jhuna Francisco.

Dexter Opalla and John Estorba topped the boys doubles by defeating USJ-R’s Akfred Armamento and Paolo Mangubat in the final.

SWU’s Jenny Rose Ramirez prevented a UC sweep after bagging the singles B title over Webmaster April Clarisse Espina.

USJ-R dominated the tertiary division by bagging three titles.

James Bell Rizon and John Roy Densing led the winning ways for the Jaguars as they topped the men’s doubles competition. Teammates Clint Armamento and Charles Plaza also ruled the singles A and B categories.

But USJ-R failed to sweep all the tertiary titles  after University of San Carlos’ (USC) Janel Dihiansan and Celia Li took the women’s singles A and B crown, respectively.

Dihiansan ousted last year’s women’s singles A champion Mary Rose Montebon of USJ-R while Li defeated USJ-R’s Jenny Coca in the women’s B final.

Jessa Mae Lagat and Irish Mae Ares also gunned down defending champion Jewel Amor Collamat and Nessie Benetiz of USJ-R in the women’s doubles final.
