MANILA, Philippines–With only two dogs to keep her company in a house left to her by her friend in San Pedro, Laguna, 64-year-old Gloria Mendoza may appear to some people to be lonely.

That she is suffering from glaucoma for which she needs to be operated on immediately may seem an additional burden for her to bear but not when she has her friends to rely on.

“Well, we are here to give her company, to cheer her up and to help her with her daily needs,” Roda Cunanan told the Inquirer.

She said that when Mendoza’s health started deteriorating, she and the former’s other friends, Inday and Aloja, began to worry for her.

“We contributed what little money we had so she could see a doctor and have a checkup,” Cunanan added.

Doctors at Westlake Medical Center in Laguna province found out that Mendoza was suffering from diabetes and hypertension. They recommended that she undergo a 2D Echo test for her heart and an eye operation as her glaucoma was making it hard for her to see. Both procedures will cost Mendoza P42,000.

Roda Cunanan can be reached at 0920-8159194. Donations can be coursed through her EastWest bank account (# 0128012771).
