Cop, bomb-sniffing dog injured in two Zamboanga explosions

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A policeman and a bomb-sniffing dog were wounded when two bombs exploded here Sunday night.

Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, spokesperson of the city police, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by phone that the first explosion happened at 7:20 p.m. along Tomas Claudio Street.

Some 10 minutes later, as members of the police’s Explosive and Ordnance team were inspecting another suspected bomb, another explosion occured, wounding  K9 handler Police Officer 2 Manuel Franklin Inid and his dog Diego.

“He (Inet) was inspecting the baggage after Diego gave indication of possible presence of explosive, after a few seconds, it went off,” Huesca said.

The explosions happened near the Magical videoke bar and massage parlor, and few meters away from Yang’s Hotel and main headquarters of the Zamboanga City Police Office.

Colonel Andrelino Colina, commander of the Joint Task Group Zamboanga confirmed the explosions but still awaiting post blast report.

Inid was brought to the Brent Hospital. He sustained serious injuries on his face.

Diego, the dog, sustained minor injuries.
