Tropical Storm ‘Paeng’ here, but not for long
MANILA, Philippines—Tropical Storm “Paeng” (international name: Nuri) entered the Philippine area of responsibility last night, but the weather bureau does not expect this to make landfall.
The storm entered the country between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
The 19th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year, the storm was estimated about 1,000 kilometers east of Visayas on Friday night.
Intensifying during the day as it neared, the storm’s winds reached a maximum sustained speed of 65 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 80 kph as of Friday night.
The storm moved slowly out at sea east of Visayas in a west northwest direction at 15 kph.
If it keeps to its current track, Paeng will not make landfall but will traverse the east Philippine Sea for the next four to five days in the direction of southern Japan.
No public storm signals were raised.
Pagasa weather forecaster Samuel Duran said the storm will be too far out at sea so this will only enhance the prevailing northeast monsoon that may bring rains over northern and southern Luzon in the next four to five days. Dona Z. Pazzibugan
