MANILA, Philippines — After the Sandiganbayan granted a one day furlough to retired Philippine National Police Director Eliseo dela Paz, the former police official is expected to leave the custodial center at the Camp Crame national headquarters Friday afternoon.

The anti-graft court granted Paz’s request to attend his mother’s wake in Villamor Airbase in Pasay City and her burial at The Heritage in Taguig City on Saturday.

Paz will leave the Philippine National Police headquarters at 3 p.m. this Friday and is expected to be back in his detention cell 3 p.m. Saturday.

Paz has been detained at the PNP custodial center since 2008 after failing to declare the foreign currency that he and members of his delegation brought out of the country during a trip to Russia to attend the 77th Interpol General Assembly.

In October of the same year, De la Paz was barred from boarding his flight at the Moscow International Airport where authorities discovered in his possession 105,000 euros or P6.9 million, the amount reportedly left over from the funds that he had carried as the disbursing officer for the PNP delegation, which included police officials’ wives.

The expose came to be known as the “eurogenerals scandal”.
