UPLB provides shuttle service, sets ‘curfew’ after rape incident

MANILA, Philippines—The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) took various steps to fortify security in the campus after one of its students was raped.

In a statement released Thursday, UPLB Chancellor Rex Cruz outlined the various steps that the administration has enforced to ensure the safety at the academe.

Cruz said that the university has recruited and deployed more guards to secure the campus premises.

UPLB will also prohibit campus activities to go beyond 10 p.m. so that students can go home early.

Also, a shuttle service for late night activities will be provided for students to bring them to their houses and dorms. The shuttle service will be deployed at 10 p.m., 12 a.m., 2 a.m., and 4 a.m.; and at 11 p.m., 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. at various pick-up points inside the campus.

Cruz said the university will tap the help of the local government of the Los Baños and residents near the campus to guard “porous” entries of the university.

The UPLB Chancellor also said that the university strongly condemns the October 15 rape incident and that it serves as “a rallying call” for authorities to get rid of criminals in the campus and its nearby areas.

A 17-year-old student of UPLB was raped along IPB road outside the university campus after she was picked-up by a tricycle driver.

The suspect of the rape incident was arrested last October 16.
