CEBU CITY — Public elementary and high school classes were suspended in Cebu City and the entire Cebu province today, Thursday, because of heavy rains.
Water has risen to knee-deep levels in parts of Cebu City particularly along Tagonol and Sabellano Streets in the south district.
The rains are caused by the low pressure area about 150 kilometers east of Surigao City, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Light to moderate rains are expected to affect Cebu City and Cebu province until this afternoon, said Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, head of the city’s command center.
Tumulak said rainshowers started about 3 a.m.
The heavy rain prompted acting Cebu City Mayor Edgar Labella to call for suspension of classes in the city.
On the advice of Pagasa Visayas chief Oscar Tabasa, Cebu Governor Hilario Davide also ordered suspension of classes in the province at 6 a.m.
