Did you know: Mariano Jhocson

Today, Oct. 14, is the 137th birth anniversary of the founder of National University, Mariano Jhocson. Born in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Jhocson founded the Colegio Filipino, a nonsectarian and coeducational primary school, at his residence on Palma Street, Quiapo. Its name was changed to Colegio Mercantil in 1905 before it became the National Academy in 1916. On March 15, 1921, the school was renamed National University. Jhocson died on March 17, 1928.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
