Phivolcs: Mayon eruption ‘within weeks’
MANILA, Philippines – After the lava flow on Sunday, Mayon Volcano could have a hazardous eruption within weeks, the volcanology institute said.
In its 8 a.m. Monday bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that magma is present at the crater and that a hazardous eruption is possible within weeks.
On Sunday, the volcano released lava that reached 350 meters downhill from the summit.
Mayon also recorded two volcanic quakes from Sunday 8 a.m. to Monday 8 a.m. and had a sulfur dioxide flux of 420 tons per day on Sunday.
Despite this, Phivolcs said Mayon remains under Alert Level 3.
