GenSan farmers to get free crop insurance

/ 06:00 AM October 11, 2014

GENERAL SANTOS CITY—Farmers here can look forward to free insurance coverage following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the city government and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC), Mayor Ronnel Rivera said.

Rivera said under the agreement, the city government would pay the premiums for the insurance of some 14,000 hectares of agricultural land.

A number of the city’s areas are considered flood-prone and had been devastated in the past by floods that destroyed millions of pesos of crops.

Rivera said he had asked city agriculturist Merlinda Donasco to work with the PCIC in implementing the program, which was expected to start before the year ends.
